Within a Conservation Area, New Build
David Walker Architects , 39 Great Portland Street , LONDON , W1W 7JZ
In 2009, DWA received planning permission for the new Bulgari hotel in Knightsbridge, London. The hotel provides 76 bedrooms over six stories with residential apartments on the upper three floors. The massing along Knightsbridge reinforces the existing scale and character of the Mansion blocks that make up the Conservation Area, while the formal, symmetrical north elevation establishes the presence of the hotel. The massing along Knightsbridge Green breaks back providing adequate daylight to the adjacent residential buildings. The Portland stone base is supported by a lighter three storey upper element creating a clear distinction between the hotel and residential use. This delineation is strengthened by the continuous setback around the building.
