Location: Ansty, nr Haywards Heath, West Sussex Local Authority: Mid Sussex District Council Size: 330m2 total Completed: 2023 A new development of 3 houses addressing the housing need in a Sussex village setting, using traditional materials with a contemporary vernacular style and utilising sustainable technologies. The site is in the Sussex village of Ansty and is within the existing built-up boundary. The development is situated in the large garden of a property on London Road and consists of three new dwellings including 2no. 2 bedroom and 1no. 4 bedroom houses, each with front and rear gardens and parking spaces. Planning permission was secured for the development, which addresses the local need for new smaller 2-bedroom dwellings as identified in the Ansty Neighbourhood Plan and also offers the opportunity to create new low energy homes which will be more sustainable into the future. Designs were prepared to meet the National Space Standards for new dwellings. A character study was undertaken in the local area to analyse the architectural style and appearance of its existing dwellings, showing a range in form and materials finishes used, including timber cladding, render and brick finishes on external walls; with slate, clay and concrete roof tiles. We proposed a design which reflects a contemporary interpretation of a traditional style. Materials for the new dwellings include brick walls at ground floor and timber cladding at first floor, with contemporary windows and slate roof tiles. A new timber framed car port for Sunnyside will have a brick plinth with weatherboarding and slate roof tiles, to reflect a more traditional style. Solar panels and air source heat pumps were included to provide a sustainable future for the homes. Construction of the houses was completed in 2023.
