Listed Building - Grade II
Ralph Allen's Town House , 2 Church Street , Bath , Somerset , BA1 1NL
Whatley Manor Hotel is a listed Grade 2 Cotswold Manor House standing in 12 acres of gardens and grounds with frontage onto the River Avon. David Brain Partnership was commissioned by the Landolt family, to completely refurbish and extend the original Country House in order to provide a unique hotel within its own superb setting. The majority of the original buildings, belong to the twentieth century, having been built for H C Cox between 1925 and 1930. He created a spectacular country house and gardens, importing many architectural features from older English properties. The existing historic photographic record of the estate provided the inspiration for the proposed scheme. It was very important that the character and charm of the original building should not be spoilt - instead, the house and grounds should be restored to match and exceed their former glory of the 1930s. Twenty-three bedroom suites were provided, a non-resident restaurant and a new wing containing 8 new suites. This allowed the existing Court House, a separate building within the grounds, to provide the required on-site staff accommodation. The leisure/spa complex was a crucial element in the business plan for both residents and non-resident revenue and sits adjacent the former stable yard.
