Listed Building - Grade II
Ralph Allen's Town House , 2 Church Street , Bath , Somerset , BA1 1NL
David Brain Partnership continues its association with the Mallory Court Hotel in order to expand the range of facilities offered by the hotel to include a spa and further bedrooms. The new building enhances the setting of the main hotel building without imposing itself upon the existing complex. Mature specimen trees are maintained and provide depth to the surrounding landscape. The accommodation provides a new spa pool, fitness suite and dining area on the ground floor with associated bedroom accommodation at first floor level and a range of treatment rooms on the second floor. The aesthetic of the new building draws reference from the original Percy Morley Horder 1914 design, which in turn owes it’s own debt to the 17C vernacular revival Arts and Craft Movement. The combination of lime render with stone dressings is continued, reflecting the palette of the original building. Stone dressings, mullions, door surrounds and gable apex stones are in Grinshill sandstone set in lime mortar. Plinth work and the stone below bay windows is in Great Tew ironstone. In the coming years, these materials will age and assume a familiar patina, settling the proposed building into its immediate surrounds and the wider context of the site.
