Ralph Allen's Town House , 2 Church Street , Bath , Somerset , BA1 1NL
The proposals not only served to repurpose the barn and allow greater use than previously, but also have sensitively altered it internally in order to enhance the existing historical fabric while providing a modern and comfortable family dwelling. Particular attention was paid to maintain the open nature of the threshing aisle. By a careful redesign of the interior layout, it has been possible to remove the staircase from this main area and the bridge, which formerly bisected the open space upon entry, was repositioned to the west, where it also serves as a viewing platform. The East and West elevations of the barn were required to retain and reflect deference to the Listed Church, Farmhouse and the open countryside to the west. The accommodation is heated by a geo thermal heat recovery system laid out to the rear fields. There is a system of heat recovery from the main bathroom extractors feeding fresh air to the rest of the house. Harvested rainwater supplies the washing machines and WC cisterns.
