Greenwich
Listed Building - Grade II
Dannatt, Johnson Architects LLP
Unit 1 The Wireworks , 77 Great Suffolk Street , LONDON , SE1 0BU
University of Greenwich, Maritime Greenwich Campus The Royal Naval College is one of the foremost achievements of English Baroque planning and design. Christopher Wren was appointed as surveyor for the main four-building complex in 1695. Other architects included Hawksmoor, Campbell, Ripley, James and Stewart. The principal buildings are all Grade I listed and Scheduled Ancient Monuments and have been converted, following withdrawal by the Royal Navy, to provide more than 20,000 square meters of accommodation as a campus for around 8000 students. By way of example, the campus contains 8 new lecture theatres with a capacity of over 1100 seats. The project was then implemented at the rate of one or two major buildings per year, all completed in line with academic year starts, including the refurbishment of the adjacent Grade II listed Dreadnought Seamens’ hospital as a Library and Learning Resource Centre.
