New Build
Proposal for a new 110 bed care centre with close links to the existing district hospital in Mürzzuschlag (Austria). Treatment and communal facilities are grouped in pavilions around a central courtyard acting as a village green for the development. Residential accommodation is located on the two upper floors. Arranged in a cross shape with four wings the departments can be subdivided into smaller units in response to future changes in the model of care provision. The gentle curves of façade draw the eye to the main entrances and give the building a sculptural appearance within the landscaped park surrounding the hospital. The scheme was a joint entry with jmarchitects in an open EU wide competition. It won 3rd prize and was commended for its innovative concept by the jury.
