Conversion of an unused Arts and Crafts pavilion into a visitor centre for King’s Gardens. Southport volunteer group ‘The Friends of King’s Gardens’ required a dedicated space to interact with visitors wanting to explore the history of the gardens, run workshops and host regular gardening events. Public engagement sessions with local groups and the Friends of Kings Gardens informed the designs and led to a multifunctional space incorporating displays, audio-visual presentations, storage and a flexible workshop and seating area. Themes for the display areas were developed through research of the garden’s rich history in the council’s archives, generating a rich source of visual and audio information for wall graphics, handling objects and information panels.
