Damian Howkins Architects Limited
Unit 11 (Mavis) , The Energy Centre , Bowling Green Walk , London , N1 6AL
Damian Howkins Architects were appointed to extensively remodel and extend a terraced Victorian property in Nunhead, London. The proposal takes into careful consideration the effect on the character and appearance of the existing house and the adjacent buildings through a sensitive approach to scale, design and materiality. The client asked us to assist with extending the property and rationalising the current bedroom arrangement to meet the needs of their young family. The proposals allow for adjusting and extending the first floor layout, creating a larger third bedroom and additional storage at the property. The proposed extensions to the building will be finished using a combination of materials found in the local palette, which enhance and complement the character of the existing building. The rear elevation at ground floor level will be removed and replaced with cast concrete new walls to complement the existing brickwork. The expansive structural glazed roof opens up the view to the sky giving the space an external character. Fixed structurally bonded glazed flush windows will be placed at the rear of the closet wing. Large slim seamless framed glass doors provide a refined contrast against the rough concrete. A continuous polished concrete floor flows throughout the opened up ground floor spaces and provides a uniform platform between the internal and external spaces.
