Haringey
£3m to £4.99M
Client: The London Borough of Haringey Date of Commencement: 02.2018 Completion of Construction: 08.2020 Contract Value: £2.7 million GIFA: 1,265m2 Predicted kgCO2/m3 in use: 35.9 4,780 linear metres bookshelf capacity Built to replace a smaller 19th c. library, Hornsey Library was completed in April 1965. Our brief to transform and upgrade the existing library was split into two key areas: building fabric, fittings, and system upgrades, repairs, and maintenance; and the reconfiguration of the internal spaces to suit 21st c. library operations. Due to its Grade II listing, we took an approach to preserve and restore to avoid making irreversible changes to its appearance. We aimed to improve its thermal performance, enhance its character, and reflect the community users and their varied requirements. This restore and re-use approach also suited the limited available budget of £2.7M and minimised the environmental impact of new materials. Like-for-like, high performance replacement of the distinctive curtain walling and roof insulation exemplifies the fabric-first methodology, achieved through successful collaboration between architect, contractor, manufacturer, and Conservation officer. An etched glass map of the area by local artist Fred Mitchell was retained in-place in the curtain walling which alsoenables natural ventilation: the roofing renewal allowed the installation of a 29kWp rooftop PV array. Inside, obstacles for access have been removed and additional space has been allocated to expanding services. Sensitive renovation of existing listed features such as the bookstacks, study desks and tea bar are complemented by new furniture and equipment, enabling a modern library service with roaming staff, wireless devices, and touchdown points. The children’s library has been enhanced and neurodiversity considerations have been made through the addition of a sensory room and silent cinema.
