Islington
Bunhill 2 Energy Centre is a world-first scheme that uses waste heat from the London Underground to warm homes, leisure centres and a school in Islington. The revolutionary project provides a blueprint for decarbonising heat in potential future schemes in London and around the world, reducing heating bills and carbon emissions while improving air quality and making cities more self-sufficient in energy. Although modest in scale, Cullinan Studio designed the energy centre to exude power and purpose - evocative of good civic industrial architecture. Consulting extensively with the local community, Planners and Councillors, Cullinan Studio's approach was to create a well-composed assembly of prefabricated structures, clad in attractive materials and set in an enhanced landscape. Leading on from Bunhill 2, Cullinan Studio has been part of the GreenSCIES InnovateUK-funded project, helping to devise how a new smart local energy system can be successfully integrated into our neighbourhoods and help Islington Council achieve its ambition of being a net-zero carbon borough by 2030.
