As part of the UK government’s academy building programme, cube_design was appointed as lead consultant to undertake the redevelopment of The Bourne Academy, a mixed-gender, 1050 pupil, secondary school in Bournemouth. Building works comprise a new single-storey and double-storey extension, together with the partial demolition, refurbishment and remodelling of the remainder of the school. Careful co-ordination between the Design Team and Contractor ensured that the academy could continue in occupation throughout the building works. New facilities include a landmark entrance building, a sixth form centre, art & technology workshops, science laboratories, ICT suites, catering & hospitality classrooms and a 200-seat multi-use activity hall. A vibrant internal and external colour scheme and way-finding super-graphics convey a sense of identity for the academy, evoke its ethos of inclusive learning and promote the new academy to the local community. New courtyards with suspended, coloured canopies serve as external learning spaces, connected by a network of covered walkways for convenient external circulation. A new multi-use games area is also provided.
