Set in open countryside, equidistant between the coastal settlements of Rock and Trebetherick, this beautiful new home is designed with family living at its heart. With outline planning consent already in place, the clients came to CSA Architects with a clear brief: to design a high-quality, modern family home that blends effortlessly into the rural setting, whilst offering protection from the extreme Cornish weather. Integral to the design was the retention of part of the existing Cornish slate wall separating the site from the lane, to provide a safe, secure and private home for the family. Entering the property from the lane we reformed the access with a multi-latch driveway gate to allow a smaller enclosed area against the house to be created to keep the kids safe when required. Due to the exposed location, the exterior features a robust palette of Cornish granite and natural cedar cladding, combined with a modern pitched design. Solar PV panels, air source heating and excellent insulation combine with the electric car charge point to ensure that this home will not only continue to look fantastic for its lifetime, but also remain low energy. There is a huge amount of natural light in the property, including a bespoke triangular roof light over the stairwell and large picture windows on the first floor to capture the far-reaching coastal views. On the ground floor, the south facing kitchen-dining room and living room have extensive glass sliding doors protected from overheating by a simple veranda that extends the living space into the garden. Working closely with the client, and their builders, ensured that the property was completed on time and within budget, meeting both the family’s needs and their dreams. CSA provided full architectural services from concept to completion, which was achieved in June 2019.
