Unit G1 , The Chandlery , 50 Westminster Bridge Road , London , SE1 7QY , United Kingdom
The brief for this recently purchased Victorian semi-detached family home was to create additional space for an open-plan kitchen and dining area while addressing the disconnect between the front and rear of the house, as well as its relationship with the garden—challenges exacerbated by significant level changes. A glazed winter garden was introduced at the heart of the plan, creating a seamless flow from front to back and into the garden, while also bringing natural light into areas that traditionally suffer from low levels of illumination. Thoughtfully integrated level changes within this space eliminated the original steep flights of steps, improving accessibility and enhancing spatial fluidity. The original oak kitchen was carefully refurbished and fully reused, respecting the home’s character while minimizing waste. New and existing materials were stripped back to reveal their intrinsic beauty—plywood-lined roof lights and soffits, exposed timber joists, and textured brickwork all work together to bring warmth and a tactile richness to the dining area
