Completed in March 2012 and situated on the former site of Clydesmill Power Station, adjacent to the River Clyde, the new Uaill Training Centre is now home to 133 staff and has been described as one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the UK. An eye catching two-storey Academic Building, featuring a sweeping three-storey glazed atrium and four-storey observation tower, forms the hub of the 40 acre site. Boasting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating the building incorporates lecture theatres, seminar and conference rooms, a library, auditorium, offices and a bespoke incident command training suite, the first of its kind in the UK. Adjacent to the Academic Building, a single-storey Practical Facilities Building provides changing facilities for the firefighters, while the outdoor grounds are separated into three hazard training zones to simulate residential, industrial and transport rescue scenarios. Realistic training is paramount and Robert Scott, Area Commander, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service commented: “Our firefighters will be turning up to a very realistic training experience which will be invaluable when they have to do it for real. We have an industrial zone with lock-ups and a petrochemical plant, a transport zone with an 80-metre stretch of motorway, a rail track complete with train, tunnel and level crossing, and our residential zone features houses and multi-storey flats.” Brian Sweeney, Chief Officer of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service commented: “I’ve seen purpose-built centres in Hamburg, Dubai and Abu Dhabi and this is right up there with the best of them.”
