Budongo Trail is an award-winning 15,070ft2 chimpanzee enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo, linking an exciting visitor experience with wildlife conservation, science, education and research. Designed to house up to 50 chimpanzees, the facility consists of three pods linked by bridges and tunnels, which are connected to an external enclosure. The public are able to get close to the chimps as a public route weaves between the pods, whilst an interpretation space and flexible 200-seat auditorium are used to explain the conservation programme the Zoo is sponsoring in Uganda. Each pod has a different form and light levels, but all of the pods are primarily top lit to create the sense of the chimps natural rainforest habitat. The new building also includes a small corporate facility and retail space, a keepers office, a storeroom, and a food preparation area.
