Consarc have delivered DLR’s latest flagship station, Langdon Park. This station has proven to actively regenerate the Langdon Park area, located on the DLR line running between Poplar and Stratford. The new station was to be strategically located between existing stations at ‘All Saints’ and ‘Devons Road’, serving both existing and new residential zones and was to act as a catalyst in the regeneration of this part of Tower Hamlets and Leaside. The site is adjacent to the existing recreational facility of Langdon Park on the eastern boundary and an area of light industrial B1 usage aligning the busy Chrisp Street to the west. Immediately opposite the site is a large secondary school. The current site is a live railway bounded on the east and west sides by bricks walls and fencing. The Carmen Street approach to the existing footbridge was narrow and frequently obstructed by vehicles. The approach from Hay Currie Street was heavily graffitied and poorly maintained. The steps were not clearly visible from Bright Street. The condition of the bridge was intimidating and it was poorly lit at night. The corner of Bright Street and Hay Currie Street was dominated by a brick wall that flanks the DLR cutting and a disused changing facility in Langdon Park. The new station offers an open bridge and transparent ‘beacon’ lift towers. The £7.5M station provides a permanent visual connection from the track crossing to lifts and station platforms. Integrating several unique materials, careful consideration was made in the choice of ETFE for Trackside Canopies and structurally integral Fibre Reinforced Composite in the Bridge Roof. The station as a whole is conceived as a local landmark through the integration of the bridge and feature lift towers. The canopy sails over the bridge structure as a lightweight aerofoil fin suspended from two towers, mirrored in plan at either end of stairways to the bridge deck. The lift towers themselves are beacons in the landscape creating a visual identity for the DLR Station discernible from Chrisp Street and across Langdon Park. Use of transparent materials and careful consideration in layout affords the passenger a sense of security whilst moving through the station and its environs by the elimination of blind spots. An important aspect of the scheme is the transparency along the length of the bridge and the clear views across the platforms to visually link the two sides. This optimises public policing of the station and encourages a sense of safety for all users.
