This property in West Hampstead had little connection to its rear external space and received very little natural light internally. The rear garden façade was banal and contrasted greatly with the striking bay windows that projected along the street. Each existing bay is classically proportioned with a clear chamfered base, below angular columns that then support a top horizontal pediment with detailed terracotta inserts. Our proposal extends the living spaces out into the rear garden and introduces some of the detail and historical proportionality from the front façade. The pedimented roof plane is a textured datum with angular rooflight openings allowing light deep into the living spaces. Below, angled columns formed of stone contrast with the textured plane above that in turn sit on a terrazzo base which form the lowered floor to the extension.
