Colony was approached to design alterations to this substantial listed building in Surrey to suit modern family living requirements of a larger kitchen space with better connection to other social spaces and views out to the garden. The early 18th Century brickwork walls were a key part of the original character of the building, and we wanted to make sure this was kept and highlighted in the proposals. In close dialogue with the clients we developed a modern-style design with zinc cladding and contrasting black brick interior, which was pulled away from the existing house to keep the historic layers easily readable. A visually light-weight connection to the house was made with frameless glass which kept alterations to the original brickwork to a minimum and allows the external brickwork walls to feature inside the new spaces.
