Alteration to existing property, Brownfield site
Clear Architects , The Studio , 38 Church Hill , LOUGHTON , Essex , IG10 1LA
The brief was to convert a derelict office block housed within a Victorian former warehouse/factory into two luxury residential homes. Design Features: • Created two ‘upside-down’ homes with the bedrooms on the ground floor and open-plan living space on the upper floor to take full advantage of the exposed King Truss rafters and multiple Georgian style windows to each floor due to its previous use allowing light to flood each floor. • Roof terrace – the ‘upside down’ layout also facilitated easier access to the newly inserted roof terrace from the kitchen/living space. Recognition: • Highly Commended by The Sunday Times’ British Homes Awards 2013 in the Conversion, Restoration or Refurbishment category. • Featured in Real Homes Magazine (October 2014). • Featured in a book: 'Design. The Key to a Better Place', available from the RIBA Bookshop. • Participated in Open House London 2014 and was visited by more than 100 people during the one-day event.
