With changing patterns of retail, nationally and locally, Gravesend Borough Market (chartered in 1268, built in 1897) found itself, in the beginning of the 21st C, on the retail margins of Gravesend Town Centre in terms of location and trade.  Competition from an increasing value retail offer in the town and a progressive shift over the years in the primary shopping area westwards and away from the old High Street significantly eroded the Market’s role and position within the town.  However, markets are today experiencing a resurgence nationally where they are changing to meet new retail demands.  Major refurbishment projects are helping Markets to once again play a central, destination role within established retail centres.  This has been reinforced by the recognition given in the recommendations of the Government backed 2011 Portas Review. We worked closely with Gravesham Borough Council’s economic development team to develop an aspirational masterplan for the market and to make a successful £1.8 bid to the Coastal Communities Fund. Opened before Christmas 2016, the revamped market holds 21 permanent stalls, 30 temporary stalls, a café and a food court with seating and 6 pop-up food stalls, and will eventually open out onto the future Market Square development with al fresco café seating and outdoor stalls . The historic building has been conserved and improved with a new roof, the re-introduction of natural light (removed sometime in the 1970s) and ventilation, new lighting and heating, public facilities and stalls and seating areas. The completed project has revitalised the market’s role as a shopping experience and destination for locals and visitors within the town centre, a generator of job opportunities and focus for new start-up businesses, and a much needed events space within Gravesend Heritage Quarter.
