Alteration to existing property
Cranbrook School was founded in 1518 when John Bulbery, a wealthy Yeoman who bequeathed his ‘chief mansion’ and lands to provide a school house for the town’s children. It is one of the few state-funded schools offering boarding for students and sits within the Cranbrook Conservation Area and has a number of listed buildings on site and close by, including Grade I listed St Dunstan’s Church. In 2015 the school leadership and Governors commissioned a feasibility study to investigate future development projects for the future. Top of the list was a new Sixth Form Centre to replace a small existing building. Planning was approved in 2015 to demolish the building and replace it with a new two storey brick building with zinc roof. Gym classes now take place in the sports hall. The ground floor is a social space, zoned with furniture to create an area for discussion, an informal seating area and café style seating that spills out externally. There are toilets and a small kitchenette for tea and coffee making. The first floor provides an acoustically separated environment for quiet study.
