This project is for a side return extension to a semi-detached house in Muswell Hill. The client’s brief was to provide a bright and spacious kitchen/living with dining and break out area for the family. As the back of the house is north facing, we designed a space that enhances the provision of natural light and the visual connection with the rear garden. The geometry of the roof, divided in two pitched sections culminating with skylights, reflects the internal layout arrangement. One roof covers the kitchen area, whereas the other one is located above the living/dining and break out area. The big skylights are centred with the two spaces providing plenty of light from above. A rectangular bay window with integrated pillow seats provides the perfect chill out spot with view to the garden. The island kitchen is located along the side portion of the extension and a rectangular fixed window frames the view towards the side alley. We also managed to seamlessly hide an entire room behind the kitchen. This allows the Client to easily access a very generous pantry and utility. These small but functional aspects, combined with an unexpected architecture are key factors that sold the concept to Client. If you can gain the trust from the early stages it becomes very pleasant to develop the project together.
