Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property
Bryngwilla Lodge , St Martins Road , Gledrid , Oswestry , Shropshire , SY10 7AY , United Kingdom
Standing in the grounds of a Georgian house on the edge of the village, the annexe has been formed from an old stone outbuilding and a small extension on the footprint of a demolished garage. It provides spill over accommodation for visitors and a studio for the artist owner of the property. Together with a small courtyard created by a new drystone wall it provides a quiet place to sit and contemplate the view across the fields to the Long Mynd. The fabric of the old building has been carefully repaired with stone walls repointed in lime mortar to match the existing, a reclaimed slate roof and an oak door and frame retained to form a shutter to a new window. Insulated and fitted with underfloor heating controlled remotely from the house it is now warm and comfortable. A small lead roofed area opens on to the courtyard and connects to the new cedar clad extension which sits alongside the repaired outbuilding. It provides a small kitchen and shower room as well as the entrance lobby to the annexe. The internal joinery and other details were designed in collaboration with the owner.
