Extension and full renovation of an existing duplex flat to create a bright contemporary penthouse apartment. We were approached with the brief to renovate the existing flat to make it suitable for family living, primarily by making the connection between the two floors and the roof terrace perimeter safe for an increasingly mobile young child. The flat was heavily subdivided with a dark entrance space, enclosed corridors, gloomy kitchen and no consideration of storage space. We identified opportunities to add all of the typical utilitarian spaces required for family life whilst also ensuring a level of grandeur and refinement befitting of a modern cosmopolitan family. We developed a strategy to remove the majority of subdividing walls on the top floor and add precisely composed rooflights to transform the dark interior of the flat into a bright, lively hub for family life with daylight flooding down a new bespoke oak stair to greet visitors at the entrance on the lower floor.
