Listed Building - Grade II*, Alteration to existing property
Childs+Sulzmann Architects were appointed to the £3m refurbishment of Clevedon Hall, a Grade II* listed 150-year old mansion. The historic building, latterly used as a school and then a call centre, was recently re-launched as an events venue. Childs+Sulzmann were tasked with converting the largely run-down and derelict vacant space into 25 luxury bedrooms and bathrooms to support the emerging wedding business. The brief was to give the bedrooms and suites a contemporary twist with traditional finishes embodying the same English country house theme, whilst keeping the historic character that runs throughout the whole property. The team worked closely with English Heritage, the local conservation officer and Jane Clayton Interiors to achieve an authentic country house aesthetic throughout the project, restoring many original features in the process. “We drew on our extensive experience of working with heritage properties to stitch new facilities into the historic fabric in a way that was sympathetic to the building’s special character,” Nick Childs, Design Director, Childs+Sulzmann.
