The Digital Lab at Sainsbury’s head office was conceived as a flexible, collaborative workspace for a 180-strong digital team. The brief prioritised creativity, adaptability and new ways of working, shaped through a consultative charrette process with end users. Innovative use of BIM enabled the insertion of a new mezzanine within underutilised space, increasing usable area and future flexibility. A mix of open plan, breakout, quiet and social spaces supports varied working styles, centred around a feature stair and atrium connections. Natural and artificial lighting strategies enhance spatial quality. The project established a prototype for agile working environments rolled out across the wider estate.
