Greenwich

New Build
Ground Floor Unit B , Dickens Court , 13-16 Britton Street , London , EC1M 5SX , United Kingdom
The Sainsbury’s store at Greenwich Peninsula redefined supermarket design through a four-year collaboration focused on environmental performance. Conceived as the world’s first low-energy superstore, the brief challenged conventional retail models, rethinking form, materials and servicing to minimise environmental impact while enhancing customer experience. The building was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize and achieved a then-unprecedented BREEAM Excellent rating with a perfect score, using half the energy of a standard store. Design strategies included a north-lit sales floor, passive ventilation, earth-sheltered envelope, and on-site renewables. Extensive use of recycled and natural materials reduced embodied impacts, establishing a prototype for sustainable retail adopted internationally.
