This single-storey, low-energy weekend house is sited in a 7.5 hectare field bounded by trees on three sides and adjacent to a large pond. It is a modern interpretation of the solar house of the 1930s, formed of two conjoined L-shapes in plan, one for normal weekend occupation, the second brought in to use when family or friends visit. Three wings project out in to the landscape with a raised terrace and decked areas nestled between them. Built using prefabricated SIPS panels and finished in timber boarding, the south-facing glazing, super-insulation, a ground-source heat pump, PV panels and wood burners ensure minimal energy consumption.
