Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II, Sited in AONB, Within a Conservation Area
Located within the Brecon Beacons National Park, this project achieves the repair, alteration and specialist thermal upgrade of a stone barn, overlooking Ffawydogg near Crickhowell. A series of oak-boarded insertions subtly divide the original volume to provide a private craft workshop and studio space, served by a small kitchen and shower room discreetly located within a previously under utilised lean-to. Physically seperated from the barn's stone structure, these oak elements create a resonant interplay between new and old that extends to the barn's exterior where further oak boarded interventions carefully moderate the scale of the original openings, whilst referencing and reinforcing their agricultural character. Shortlisted for The National Eisteddfodd Welsh Gold Medal for Architecture 2013
