Cassidy & Ashton have been commissioned by the College to advise, design and manage the construction of various projects since 1997. Working closely with the Governors and staff, we initially proposed a master plan for the re-development of the college for work to be carried out over a ten year period. The master plan has since acted as a guide for not only the implementation of various developments to the Grade 1 Listed Building Complex and Grounds, but also informed the ongoing Business Plan for the expansion of the College. The master plan included the Construction of a New Build Residential Block which would add to the magnificent Grade I Listed façade at Stonyhurst. The Planning and Listed Building Consents took considerable time to obtain and involved considerable consultation with the Local Authority and English Heritage. The impact of new build on the existing Buildings, and its effect on the historic Landscape all required detailed consultation and understanding. A sensitive design and appropriate detailing all contributed to the success in obtaining the necessary Consents. This 4 Storey Building is L-shaped on plan, steel framed, and clad in traditionally designed stonework. Stone Surrounds are provided to openings, and double height quoins are introduced on corners. The traditionally slated pitched roof has lead clad dormers. The building sits comfortably with the existing buildings, and responds correctly as a modern intervention within an established historic setting. The building works commenced in January 2009, and are due fore completion in March 2010. Other notable works at Stonyhurst include: The refurbishment of the existing Residential Areas to update pastoral care within the Boarding Standards. The refurbishment of the More Library. The repair and redecoration of the Sodality Chapel. The provision of an All Weather Pitch for Hockey within the historic Landscape. The refurbishment and remodelling of Shirk.
