The property is an Edwardian terraced house located on a residential street close to the centre of Crouch End. The client, an architect at a leading London practice, wanted to create a practical kitchen, dining and snug area filled with natural light and with a stronger connection to the rear garden. The brief was to replace an outdated and impractical conservatory and utility room with a new extension within exactly the same footprint, transforming the quality of the ground floor without increasing its area. The new extension creates a light-filled kitchen, dining and family space with direct views and access to the garden. The design carefully balances the character of the original Edwardian house with a distinctly contemporary intervention. Natural materials, carefully considered external detailing, exposed timber structure and bespoke kitchen come together to create a warm and cohesive interior. A large rooflight sits above the exposed timber rafters, bringing daylight deep into the plan while making a subtle reference to the glazed roof of the former conservatory. The exposed structure becomes an integral part of the architectural language of the extension rather than something to be concealed. As part of the wider refurbishment, the first-floor bathroom and ground-floor WC were completely redesigned and rebuilt. A new utility cupboard and bespoke timber screen were also introduced, carrying the material language and attention to detail through the rest of the house. The result is a highly personalised home designed around the needs of a family of four. Original Edwardian character is combined with contemporary architecture, craftsmanship and carefully considered detailing to create a home that feels light, natural and warm, while significantly improving the way the family uses the house and its relationship with the garden.
