Wiltshire
Bath Brewery, Toll Bridge Road , Batheaston , Bath , Somerset , BA1 7DE
This extended and reorganised Wiltshire barn relied on maximizing the limited space to provide dynamic and flexible spaces to suit the varied needs of a young family. A collection of 'floating' cupboard room dividers and sliding walls throughout enable both zones and rooms to be subtly defined as required without corridors, until private retreat is required. An open plan Kitchen/Dining/Living area reinstates the sense of the original byre with large hardwood glazed doors sliding completely away to enable the space to flow out into the garden. Cantilevered hardwood louvres prevent overheating in the summer, but allow maximum solar gain in winter. Pivot doors elsewhere allow substantial framed views from secondary spaces, with solid side panels providing controlled natural ventilation. Inexpensive materials are employed with singularly consistent detail to counter the quiet solidity of the barn, enhancing it’s spirit and creating a wonderful contemporary home.
