New Build, Within a Conservation Area
Cartwright Pickard Architects Ltd
Studio 4 , Cross York Street Studios , Cross York Street , Leeds , West Yorkshire , LS2 7BL
Sellers Wheel on Arundel Street is a Grade-II listed 19th century industrial courtyard complex sited at the edge of the Cultural Industries Quarter Conservation Area of Sheffield. The £3 million scheme repurposes the once-redundant Victorian building, celebrating its industrial heritage and giving it a new lease of life. The development provides a restaurant and cafe at ground floor level, with two-storeys of character offices above utilising the raw industrial character of the existing building to add value. An adjacent newly designed building houses 72 bedrooms of student accommodation. The newly designed student accommodation reinstates the original building line, yet it is clearly distinguished from the old and avoids pastiche so as not to dilute the original built fabric. The structure is made of a concrete frame with a self-supported brick skin. Precast concrete banding has been used to express the zone of floor structure and the top storey is set back from the main elevation and clad with glazed panels.
