At the outset, the project was driven by a desire to make better use of that typically difficult space – the conservatory. Our clients bought the house, a detached property in Cambridge, in 2007 and completed a large refurbishment in 2009/10 but had a series of rooms that hadn't been touched. The connection to the garden in particular was poor. In realising our client's vision for their home, BBA utilised an ‘open corner’ sliding door system, opening the living space to connect it with the garden. With no pillar where the doors meet, views of the garden are now unobstructed and natural light can flood in. Elsewhere, a ribbon of light timber forms a canopy over the doors before wrapping over a window seat that is set out from the rest of the building – becoming a perfect spot to read, relax and enjoy the garden in all weathers. The finished build leaves no remnants of the awkward space that preceded it – and realises our client's vision for a space they can live, enjoy and grow into.
