New Build
BBA were granted planning permission for a new-build family home, in a village on the Cambridgeshire/Peterborough border. Situated in the side garden of an existing detached bungalow, the new home will provide four bedrooms, across two floors. Working within the constraints of a busy suburban street the new building is designed to complement the existing bungalow and neighbouring properties. A contemporary palette of buff brick, timber and black roof tiles were selected to complement the simple, yet striking, form of the new house. Mindful of overlooking issues, a series of roof lights were proposed to first-floor bedrooms instead of windows, ensuring that rooms are bathed in natural light while remaining private. A feature gable, at front at back, is the defining element of the house, bookending double-height living and dining spaces inside. The ground floor accommodation includes a broken plan living arrangement, with an open plan kitchen and dining space at one end, and living room at the other. Each gable includes an expansive area of glazing, with floating timber screens designed to cast shadows across the space that will vary throughout the day. BBA were appointed to provide architectural services up to and including the submission of a detailed planning application. In our role as agent we played a lead role in negotiations with Huntingdonshire District Council’s Planning and Urban Design Officers, ensuring a successful outcome to the application.
