This was an interesting design challenge to improve the kitchen of what was once a large detached Victorian house that had been split into two semi-detached properties some decades ago. Due to the size of the house and the way it had been previously split the kitchen was very small in comparison to the size of the other rooms in the ground floor of the house, so the initial requirement of the homeowners was to create an extension to the rear of the existing kitchen to make the room larger. Along with the improvements to the kitchen we then managed to create space where the kitchen had originally been for a pantry, a downstairs toilet, a generously sized utility and a built-in wine fridge - another essential requirement of the design brief! In terms of the external appearance it was important that the shape and materials used in the construction of extension worked well with the existing house so that it stands out as an obviously modern extension to the house, but not appear so different that it detracts from the existing house's appearance. This was especially important due to being located in a Conservation Area.
