The new Devonshire School is the first adaptation of our generic multi-level vertical Exemplar School, designed for a tight urban site, which we christened the Beehive School. The school is orientated around an internal street from east to west, so that the learning houses face north, benefiting from good day lighting but not overheating, and the play decks face south, where they benefit from the sun but also provide shelter and shade when required. The street divides the ground floor into four quadrants: staff/admin, nursery/reception, community/multi-use facilities and the main hall/dining areas. At the upper levels, learning houses provide teaching accommodation on either side of the central circulation node, and can be accessed directly off the semi-external play decks. The roof of the main hall is also fully accessible as a landscaped technology garden.
