Affordable family housing and Young Parent Supported Housing offering 11 family homes, 8 Young Parent apartments, 1 Young Parent wheelchair accessible apartment with communal and support facilities. All units were designed to then-current DQS/HQI, Lifetime Homes and the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. The scheme offers a variety of contemporary dwellings arranged around courtyards providing residents with privacy and a sense of belonging. This creates a safe, welcoming community feel that should help build social capital whilst also offering a degree of security to residents in the Young Parent Apartments. Located in the outskirts of Durham City, it was important that Gilesgate complemented an established Durham residential neighbourhood. This was achieved through the use of carefully chosen facing materials, and through public consultation with the community and the primary school opposite. The BSBA Architect team provided full architectural services from inception to completion. The scheme was short-listed for the UKHA Small Project of the Year in 2014.
