Brock Carmichael has been working with Ruthin School as part of an over-arching Ruthin School Masterplan. This 10 year masterplan expands the school with new boarding facilities, the new dining hall, a new 6th form centre, library and a performing arts facility. Ruthin School in North Wales overlooks the Welsh Hills and Denbighshire plains. It traces its origins back to 1284 and is one of the top schools in the country for co-educational boarding and exam results. Brock Carmichael has worked on a new boarding house ‘Trevor’ which provides exceptional en-suite boarding accommodation and social spaces for 40 students which include cooking facilities, relaxing spaces and TV rooms and accommodation for the House Master’s family. Set overlooking the stunning Clwydian Range and green fields, it was designed to meet and exceed current building regulations guidelines. The project has been developed to be as sustainable as possible. The design creates an enclosed private courtyard for the students, enabling sheltered and private outdoor space. The attached House Master's house has a private garden to the east of the dwelling. It considers sheltered walkways within the school to the sports hall and future development areas and the entrance is not directly seen from the road for safety reasons. Designs for a world-class dining hall have won a number of awards. Brock Carmichael won the bid through an open competition set by the school. The character of the dining hall is intended to be similar to luxury restaurants across the world. Internal finishes are of exceptional quality and design, similar in standard to the Shangri-La Hotel in Hong Kong. Floors are a mixture of carpeted and hard flooring, chairs are to be softly furnished and sound proofing is to be well designed as part of the interior theme. A mezzanine floor adds to the functionality of the hall. The kitchen serves a variety of international cuisine to suit an array of religions and tastes. Students who attend the school are from 52 different countries and the client wished that the dining hall shall be ‘…a home away from home’.
