Conversion of the former HQ of Ogdens Tobacco, a Grade II listed, Queen Anne-style 19th century building into 19 apartments. This was part of a wider scheme by Liverpool Mutual Homes (now Torus) to transform the former Ogden’s Imperial Tobacco Factory in Everton into housing. The £19m project saw Countryside Properties build 133 new homes on the former factory buildings and convert the listed offices into 19 apartments. LMH invested £14m and the Homes and Communities Agency provided £5m of funding from its Affordable Homes Programme to provide homes for affordable rent and shared ownership. Brock Carmichael’s role in the £3.1m HQ conversion of offices into apartments integrated the new and the old to retain character within the apartment interiors and the restored common areas. This included carved timber fireplaces, Liver bird mosaics at the entrance and a grand staircase with oak panelling throughout. The bell tower dating back to 1899 and clock have also been fully restored. Following designs approval, Brock Carmichael worked with Housing Maintenance Solutions (HMS) over a 16 month period to deliver the project for LMH in October 2018. The transformation won ‘Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year‘ for Torus at the Northern Housing Awards 2019. The Clock Tower won Highly Commended for ‘Preservation and Rejuvenation’ in the North West Regional Construction Awards 2019 and a commendation in the RTPI North West Awards for Planning Excellence 2020.
