Recent refurbishment of a Grade II listed Manor house lead to many architectural challenges and discoveries. The exciting discovery of a historic access to a cellar and well, dating back some 533 years. This was located in the middle of the existing sitting room which presented us with an interesting challenge; to preserve the historic fabric whilst maintaining functionality. Our solution was to design a seamless automated floor hatch for access with a glass floor panel over the well to allow safe passage into the wine cellar. We were required to take a sensitive approach to maintain the traditional appearance of the panelled study. Our solution was to modify a fixed fake door panel to house a rotating TV. We design a replacement for a poorly detailed retro fit frosted stair lantern which had to be separated by a timber balustrade for safety reasons and replace it with a new design that increased natural light and opened up the second floor landing.
