Listed Building - Grade II
An innovative extension to an 1826 listed lodge in the wooded grounds of John Nash's (now mostly demolished) Ravensworth Castle. Unfortunately sited close to the A1, the project involved removing former extensions to make way for a garden room, new kitchen and master bedroom embedded in the garden and woodland. Clearly distinguishing the new from the old, the sedum-covered wave roof links the glazed garden room (that echoes the bay on the existing lodge), the kitchen (scaled to the same width as the block mass on the rear of the lodge) and the master bedroom, nestled within the niche of old yew tree, high garden wall and lodge. The elevations are clad in Douglas Fir with simple glass inserts, which bridges the transition leading from the old route to the castle, through formal stone carving and calmer wood detailing to garden and woodland. The Project was featured in the Ancient Monuments Society Transactions Vol. 53.
