Brownfield site, New Build, Sited in AONB, Within a Conservation Area
1A Bramley Close , Woodford Green , Essex , IG8 7PL , United Kingdom
The clients wanted to build a new home in the grounds of their existing property that would be future-proofed so that they could remain there for a long time. The design was to be single storey but without being an obvious bungalow in appearance. ( Planning permission had been achieved for a bungalow - but the clients wanted to amend this without a new planning application.) The site was located close to a village in rural Kent. The idea of an apple barn was put forward to the clients with open plan rooms and a high vaulted ceiling. The design included a far-spanning 8 metre timber truss, a gallery library and secret "gib" door leading to an attic guest bedroom or hobby room. The linings were executed in oak. The new house had underfloor heating and super insulated walls. the materials were hand made bricks and natural clay tiles.
