Within a Conservation Area, New Build, Sited in AONB
1A Bramley Close , Woodford Green , Essex , IG8 7PL , United Kingdom
The project was for a new "Nursing Kuti* or sheltered house for an elderly Buddhist Abbott providing assisted-living within the grounds of a monastery. [*a Pali term]" This sect were Theravaden or Forest Tradition. The specification required an energy efficient house with close to PassivHaus standards. The site was set within a belt of mature trees at the edge of the monastery in an Area of Outstanding Beauty. The design was to complement and existing temple nearby which was built of brick and clay tiles and which had an attractive colonnaded cloister, the low-rise style of which became the blueprint for the new building. The plan form allowed for connection between all parts of the building and to outside with special thresholds. A reception room where the monk received visitors was placed in a garden room with views to the new garden. Super-insulated walls with heat recovery and an internal oak frame created a warm and welcoming home.
