The house was a typical 1980's executive home with fake timber framing and flat roofed garage and front porch. Its appearance was not attractive to the clients but the gardens were beautiful and the location ideal. The rooms were arranged awkwardly. The project was to improve the appearance of the house externally and to rearrange the rooms to accommodate regular family visits. The comprehensive alterations included the following: Thermal wrapping of the entire elevations for improved energy efficiency and to give the elevations the appearance of a Kent farmhouse. The previously extended rear elevation was altered by extending the roof downwards and the walls upwards - giving an opportunity for half dormers. A rear extension was given a new glass roof which created a bright garden room connecting to the garden New air source heat pumps, heat recovery and an air-tightness regime made the house ultra -efficient far exceeding Building Regulations. The removal of entire floor plates created a dramatic triple height entrance hall with galleried stairwell topped by an oak truss and huge roof-light Hand made oak stairs were installed 6 panel and folding doors allowed the dining room to expand for 30 guests. 5 new bathrooms and a new kitchen were fitted. The project was awarded' best refurbishment and extension to a house' in the LABC Design Excellence Awards South East Region 2019
