This house is located in a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just north of Leith Hill, which is the highest point in Surrey. The house was designed to take maximum advantage of its site and the physical features of the locality. The house is built along the natural contours of a west facing sloping site in a copse of silver birch trees. To maintain the natural setting there is minimum interference with the ground levels and indigenous flora. The west facing elevation is fully glazed and there is a timber decked terrace to the south, accessible from the living room. A recent extension to the property provides a similar timber deck with views to the west over a sunken separate accommodation unit. The house is constructed with a structural steel frame off a brick course with glass and plywood cladding. From inside, there is minimal interference with the external views which the full height glazing affords. In 1996 construction began on a separate small guest / living accommodation dwelling to the north. Maintaining the original concept of minimal interference with the environment the new construction was recessed into the ground where the land slopes up to the hill behind. The windows come down to external ground level and the low roof level this results in affords a new terrace for the main property above. Only one dead tree was removed from the copse for the integration of this new extension.
