Within a Conservation Area
Bowman Riley Architects Limited
Wellington House , Otley Street , SKIPTON , North Yorkshire , BD23 1EL , United Kingdom
Bowman Riley provided architecture and the role of principal designer on the redevelopment of The Red House, a vacant Edwardian property set within a conservation area and a protected landscape with ecological issues in Ripon. Originally built in 1905 as a private residence, The Red House became a residential institution for Barnardo’s children’s charity in the 1940s. Working in consultation with the local community, Bowman Riley helped secure planning consent to transform the former children’s home and surrounding grounds into a retirement community of 59 properties. Built in two phases, the development provides a mix of high quality one and two-bedroom private residences comprising apartments, cottages and two-storey houses with features such as underfloor heating and walk-in showers. The existing Red House building has been refurbished and extended to accommodate the comprehensive range of communal facilities including residents’ lounges, bar, library, restaurant, consulting suite, hair and beauty salon and gym. The existing lodge, stable block and cottage have also been refurbished and extended to form apartments and cottage accommodation. The landscaping has preserved the protected trees and woodland zones and further planting has complemented and supplemented the existing mature landscape.
