Hackney
£100,000 to £249,999
Within a Conservation Area, Alteration to existing property
In a busy high street area in Dalston, Hackney the Kingsland Road bar was designed to add a rear extension to accommodate and remodel to this modern Bauhaus concept design project for a bar. The Bauhaus movement, which aimed to improve living conditions through modern technologies in the early 1900s, has become synonymous with industrial modernism. For this project, the design concept was set to convey a Bauhaus ethos throughout. The principles established by Bauhaus, including functional shapes, simple color schemes, industrial materials, balanced asymmetry, and a holistic design, formed the basis of the project's design. The clients initially did not intend to have a Bauhaus design, but after attending a venue, they wanted a "space that can operate like an assertive art movement." The bar, located in Hackney, uses the inspirational elements of Bauhaus in combination with the values of mixology to create an educational performance for patrons. The 64sqm bar has a contemporary style with lighting that reflects off Walter Gropius Lights at Bauhaus Dessau, reflecting the design concept and the history of industrialism faced in East London. The bar includes a foldable and rotatable table for flexibility, a nesting table in Bauhaus primary colors, and a rear extension inspired by the Staatliches Bauhaus classroom. Overall, the conceptual ethos of the design has transformed the bar into a bijou contemporary industrial space that uncovers the art of mixology within art.
