Complete in August 2007, this is presently the largest completed FE project in the UK. The new scheme totals over 29,000m2 in floor area and is a five storey construction, positioned in a gateway location on the edge of the city. The College has an extremely large and diverse curriculum offer. The atrium has been made an attractive and lively environment through the innovation of open-edged learning and social spaces at first, second and third floors. This reduces the barriers to learning and places it at the heart of what the college does. The layering of the learning and social environments provides bases in the atrium for different student brands. This close association of social and learning spaces, each equipped to support different customer groups, yet together forming a significant space for one learning community, is an architectural expression of the Colleges vision. Individual curriculum identity has been provided by the inclusion of learning hubs in the three main teaching wings. These have taken the form of roof- lit voids to the majority of floors around which are clustered the curriculum staff areas, tutorial rooms and an informal breakout social/learning zone. These long wings have been designed to provide easy adaptation and maximum flexibility over the life of the building. The learning hubs have also been configured to provide points for a further extension of the building by around 10-15% in the future.
